Approximately one-quarter of Buffalo residents have a Bachelor’s degree or higher, yet workforce demand projections estimate that in 2018, 67% of New York jobs will require some college or higher. Despite college prep programs preparing students for the college admissions process and providing financial support for tuition, the nation still sees drastically low graduation rates. Research shows this problem stems from a lack of social emotional and life skill preparation in pre-college age youth.

Get Ready for the 42nd Anniversary Juneteeth Festival:

"All too often we see students afforded tuition waiver and academic assistance to help them enter into college, yet these students still often drop out after their freshman year. I created this program to address the fact that these students need communication, time management, and budgeting skills, as well as emotional support in order for them to be fully prepared to excel in the world of higher education" says The College Simulation Experience founder, April Baskin.

To address this disparity, The College Simulation Experience partners with local schools and organizations, working with students in
grades 8 and above with highly interactive workshops that fill the void of soft-skill development in the education system. These workshops allow students to role play their way through four years of college, then subsequently delve deeper into the issues they encounter.

The College Simulation Experience is an educational initiative foundedin 2014 by former college drop-out turned education activist April Baskin. The organization uses stylized role-play and reenactments of college life scenarios to prepare first generation college students for higher education success. The program strives to alleviate generational poverty cycles by equipping youth with soft skills, financial management and social-emotional development as it pertains to completing their college degree. To date The College Simulation Experience has reached 1,700 students in Erie and Niagara Counties, as well as, given away $2,500 inscholarships by partnering with charitable foundations.
