When I was a child growing up, things were very different then from the way that they are now. My parents laid down the law and all of the children in the house knew the rules of discipline. In fact the way it was in our neighborhood, if a neighbor caught you doing anything that was inappropriate and against your parents and their level of expect ability you were going to get it on the way home and when you got home. I often think that the way one culture may discipline their children is totally different from the way another may discipline theirs. The removal of corporal punishment in the home and school feeds into the penal system because you are dealing with a culture that has always had a different way of disciplining their young. In the corner quiet time may work for some but not all!
