The deputy responded to a traffic accident on Route 60 early Sunday morning when the incident happened. The driver, Justin Haffa, allegedly attacked the deputy while the deputy was trying to arrest him, according to WIVB.

Authorities believe that the 21-year-old Haffa was under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both. When the sheriff's deputy tried to arrest Haffa, he allegedly tried to kill the deputy with a knife.

Undersheriff Charles Holder says the sheriff's deputy fired on Haffa with his gun, but Haffa was able to gain control of the weapon during a struggle and fled the scene. After a man-hunt that lasted a few hours, Haffa was located on Putnam Road in the Town of Stockton and arrested. Haffa now faces attempted murder and assault charges.
