A$AP Rocky is still grieving over the loss of his best friend and business partner A$AP Yams, who died in January from an accidental drug overdose. The Harlem rhymer recalls the final days of Yams’ life in an interview with the New York Times.

The insightful article chronicles the duo’s budding friendship, which led to the creation of the hip-hop collective A$AP Mob. "Yams was like a mystery. He was like the Great Gatsby,” said Rocky of Yams’ respectability in the Harlem streets.

However, Yams had a problem with drugs, which was something the late A$AP Mob founder often sarcastically joked about on his Twitter account. Despite a stint in rehab, Rocky said that Yams couldn’t beat his addiction. “He always had a struggle with drugs,” he said. “That was his thing.”

“He went out of his way to hide it,” he added. “I caught him a bunch of times, but he would still hide it. He was kind of private about it. He didn’t want his mom to know, he didn’t want me to know.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Rocky recalls the tragic night that Yams died. The Harlem rapper was hanging out at A$AP Lou’s apartment that he shared with Yams. Around 3AM, Lou tried to wake Yams up and knew something was terribly wrong. There was vomit on the bed and Yams was unresponsive.

“I just look at his face. I look at Lou. You could just tell. We knew,” Rocky said. “I was scared. I was wilding on everybody, like, ‘Who let him do drugs?,’ even though you can’t blame nobody.”

Rocky is grateful for family and friends who are helping him through his bereavement. The "Multiply" rapper is currently putting the finishing touches on his next project, A.L.L.A., of which Yams will be credited as an executive producer. Rocky still feels a connection to his departed friend. “I don’t feel alone. I just miss him,” he said.
