Know ThyselfIf truth be known, we are on the verge of losing an entire generation of our young people, due to a distorted view of reality and if one’s reality is distorted by their lack of understanding of the world and environment they live in, it causes distorted experiences in their daily life, many times resulting in negative and self-destructive behavior often manifested in violence towards one’s immediate family and community.

Most behavioral patterns stem from self-concept and a very important element of self-concept is historical identity. If one out of ignorance endeavors to dismiss the importance of the race which gave them life in world history, then they would be in essence denouncing their own self-worth which can sometimes lead to almost, without conscience, becoming an instrument of un-seeming and violent acts perpetuated against their own kind.

We have got to get back to restoring Kemetic Principles into the psyche of our community to begin to heal and fix this problem! One of the most important Kemetic Principles is MA’AT: the Ancient Ancestor’s concept of Truth, Balance, Order, Law, Morality, and Justice.

The People’s Station 93.7 WBLK has launched an ongoing consciousness awakening campaign to inform, educate, and assist our community to rediscover the awareness of SELF! We are committed to doing all that we can to make a difference because we realize and understand the current CRISIS that we live in and the importance of saving our babies and the NEXT GENERATION!!

Today’s entry is “labeling”

“Mom’s favorite question was, “boy, why you so bad?” I tried many times to explain to mama that I wasn’t “so bad.”
—Claude Brown

Our children’s behavior can be baffling. We can yell until we’re hoarse, but to no effect. Have we tried to explain our anger and disappointment calmly, holding back on the accusations and put-downs? Have we allowed them the chance to tell us what’s really going on inside them? Our child may not be able to pinpoint or articulate the reasons for his actions, but it’s possible, if we’re attentive and alert to patterns and developmental phases, for us to pull them out of the silences.

On this day, I will pledge not to be critical of my child, but, when the situation warrants, to be critical of his behavior only. I also pledge to give him encouragement any way I can at every opportunity.

 Know Thyself Feedback

Dear Mr. Reynolds:

First and foremost I'd like to  thank you and the rest of the WBLK team for doing such a fantastic job. The music is wonderful and radio hosts are fantastic. Where else can I get Alicia keys, Beyonce, X clan and Amon Rashidi in the same place!  But what has impressed me most about WBLK is its new "consciousness awareness campaign". It is absolutely brilliant!!! I am a resident of southern Ontario, and our  urban station equivalent, a knock-off of a real hip-hop and r'n'b station, not only plays the inauthentic stuff, it does nothing to awaken the minds of our Black youth and community. This despite the fact that the station was originally created to address the musical, entertainment and educational needs of the African-Canadian community in Toronto.

Unfortunately, I and many other Ontarians can only listen to WBLK  online, as the stations broadcast signals are not strong enough for us to pick up in Toronto and/or Brampton Ontario (where I live and work). I know the power of music and broadcast radio and truly believe that the Black community here in southern Ontario (which is significant) could really benefit from a similar "Know Thy Self"campaign, not to mention the musical legacy accessed with every listen. Indeed, we need something like this in Ontario. In Toronto for example, our black youth are either dying or wasting their potential in droves. We have a 60% drop high school drop-out rate among our African-Canadian youth here in Toronto. Many go on to lead lives of crime, become victimized by it or simply never realize their potential beyond their exasperating socio-economic and political condition.

If you have suggestions how we could extend WBLK's reach to Toronto (and surrounding areas) please let me know. I have been a community organizer in Toronto for the past 16 years. I have worked with and currently co-direct a local not-for-profit organization which uses the Kamitic Tree of life paradigm to develop spiritual and social consciousness among our black youth.   I realize there resources and legalities are an issue. Any information, tips that could be passed along would be greatly appreciated.

I applaud WBLK, one of the few radio stations, for being bold enough to run this campaign. I feel that this radio station is a leader not only in the Buffalo area, but in Western New York as a whole. You represent so many things that is positive in our communities. I am a proud listener.

This campaign has inspired the African American/Latin American community out here in Medina N.Y. to make a change. As you might feel living in a small community, the minority community is pushed aside. This has helped to create a unique combination of cooperation that you might not find anywhere else. We as African Americans and Latino Americans have decided to put aside differences and unite in the things that we are both fighting for. Our two groups have went through the same things in the past. Slavery did not just happen here but in the Caribbean as well.

Thank you for your time,
Hector F.
Men of Knowledge

Sir my name is George, I heard about know thyself on the radio, and looked up the website, in reading it I see that what is said is true. For many, many years the truth about who we are has been distorted, distorted to the point where our young people feel they have not only no future, but also nothing to offer. I also believe that the problem has come from the lack of understanding our ancestors. We suffer in many ways, but the one that hurts us the most IS historical identity, going back is the only way I see we can move forward, I myself did not understand how proud a people we came from until I started reading more about who I came from, but we need to go back to the beginning. I feel that our young people can not be told anymore about what has happened to people of color, it seems like they just don’t want to hear it, they need to be shown. This is the age of videos games and movies, and if it is not a video game they wont see it, our young people need to see and feel what has happened and not just be told. For more than a few years I have been attempting to have this problem solved, and the only way I saw it can be done is a museum, one that can and will tell the truth and show our young people the many things that has been done and how it was done.

I named it the African American expo. But to this day can not get anyone to help me, it seems that the commitment level of a project like this is not what is wanted, no one has the time, not even to help understand the paperwork that is needed. If I may can I mail you the proposal and see if you think this is a direction we can go in.

Mr. Reynolds, my name is Ronald and I just visited your station and left a hand written note with the receptionist. I am inquiring about the efforts going forward to continue the message "know thyself". I believe just as Asa Hilliard that self-knowledge is the most important thing our community needs. I have organized for ACORN, the BLAC, and other groups going door to door and getting a first hand look at the worst neighborhoods from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. I believe self-knowledge is the only thing that has ever worked for bringing our people together. Douglass, Garvey, Dubois, Martin and Malcolm were all armed with knowledge of self and shared this knowledge with the people who became their followers. I am currently working on some original music that speaks directly to this need for self-knowledge and I am wondering if you or the station will open up any opportunities for members of the community to help out in your efforts. Thanks for your valuable time.
